The local calendar
Toronto keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer, which is 10½ and 9½ hours behind IST. A festival counted at sunset in India, such as Diwali, falls in the morning there by the clock, so the day counted by local sunrise and sunset can differ from the Indian date by one.
The five limbs of the panchang
Panchang means five limbs. The tithi is the angle between the Moon and the Sun, in steps of 12°; the vara is the weekday, counted from sunrise; the nakshatra is the star the Moon is in, one of 27 divisions of 13°20′; the yoga comes from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, also in steps of 13°20′; and the karana is half a tithi. All five are read on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
How the numbers are calculated
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the Sun’s upper edge meets the sea-level horizon, with standard atmospheric refraction, calculated by the astronomy-engine library for the city’s coordinates. The moments at which a tithi, nakshatra, yoga or karana ends come from the Moon’s and Sun’s positions and are the same instant everywhere on Earth; the city only changes what clock time and which day that instant falls on.
