Today’s tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana with sunrise and sunset for thirty-one cities, calculated live on the Lahiri sidereal zodiac. Choose a city; the explanation below stays the same all year.
Today’s panchang
The five limbs of the panchang
Panchang means five limbs. The tithi is the angle between the Moon and the Sun, in steps of 12°; the vara is the weekday, counted from sunrise; the nakshatra is the star the Moon is in, one of 27 divisions of 13°20′; the yoga comes from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, also in steps of 13°20′; and the karana is half a tithi. All five are read on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
The tithi and the nakshatra are the two most used. The tithi tells which day of the lunar fortnight it is and fixes most festivals; the Moon’s nakshatra gives the day its character and, at birth, starts your dasha. The yoga and karana are read for the muhurat of a rite.
Why it depends on the city
The weekday, and the tithi that counts for the day, are taken at local sunrise, and sunrise moves by about four minutes for every degree of longitude and by much more with latitude and season. All Indian cities share one clock, IST, so a tithi ends at the same clock time in Delhi and in Kolkata, but their sunrises differ by half an hour. Abroad, the clock itself differs, and the same tithi can end on a different local day.
How the numbers are calculated
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the Sun’s upper edge meets the sea-level horizon, with standard atmospheric refraction, calculated by the astronomy-engine library for the city’s coordinates. The moments at which a tithi, nakshatra, yoga or karana ends come from the Moon’s and Sun’s positions and are the same instant everywhere on Earth; the city only changes what clock time and which day that instant falls on.
Choose a city
Each city page adds the coordinates, the time zone, sunrise and sunset on four dates of 2027 and a note on the local calendar.

Questions people ask
What are the five limbs of the panchang?
Panchang means five limbs. The tithi is the angle between the Moon and the Sun, in steps of 12°; the vara is the weekday, counted from sunrise; the nakshatra is the star the Moon is in, one of 27 divisions of 13°20′; the yoga comes from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, also in steps of 13°20′; and the karana is half a tithi. All five are read on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
Why does the panchang depend on the city?
Sunrise and sunset depend on latitude and longitude, and the weekday and the day’s tithi are counted from local sunrise. The moments at which the Moon’s and Sun’s positions change a limb are the same worldwide, but the clock time and the local day differ with the time zone.
Which method do you use: Drik or Vakya?
Drik: positions are calculated from the actual sky with an astronomical ephemeris, not from the older Vakya or Surya Siddhanta tables. Both are used in India; some printed almanacs, especially in Tamil Nadu, follow Vakya and can differ by a few minutes.
Why does another panchang show a different end time?
Usually the ayanamsa, the method (Drik or Vakya), or the sunrise definition. Here the Lahiri ayanamsa, the true sky and the Sun’s upper edge at sea level are used, and the page says so. A few minutes’ difference is normal; a difference of hours usually means another city or time zone.
Are the live numbers accurate?
They are calculated when the page opens with the astronomy-engine library, which is checked against the Swiss Ephemeris to within arc-seconds. For tithi and nakshatra that means end times accurate to well within a minute.
Do you list every city?
The pages cover thirty-one cities, the largest in India plus Dubai, London, Toronto, New York and Singapore. For any other place, choose the nearest city here, or cast a kundali for your own place of birth in the app.
