The United Kingdom keeps Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time in summer, 5½ and 4½ hours behind IST. Day length swings from about eight hours in December to nearly seventeen in June, so windows tied to sunrise and sunset move a great deal through the year.
The five limbs of the panchang
Panchang means five limbs. The tithi is the angle between the Moon and the Sun, in steps of 12°; the vara is the weekday, counted from sunrise; the nakshatra is the star the Moon is in, one of 27 divisions of 13°20′; the yoga comes from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, also in steps of 13°20′; and the karana is half a tithi. All five are read on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
How the numbers are calculated
Sunrise and sunset are the moments the Sun’s upper edge meets the sea-level horizon, with standard atmospheric refraction, calculated by the astronomy-engine library for the city’s coordinates. The moments at which a tithi, nakshatra, yoga or karana ends come from the Moon’s and Sun’s positions and are the same instant everywhere on Earth; the city only changes what clock time and which day that instant falls on.
