Akshaya Tritiya 2027: date, tithi and muhurat
Akshaya Tritiya 2027 falls on Sunday, 9 May, on Shukla Tritiya of Vaishakha. The times here are for Chandigarh; choose your city to see yours.
What Akshaya Tritiya is
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. ‘Akshaya’ means imperishable, and the day is taken as one on which a good beginning or a gift keeps growing. Families start new ventures, give to those in need and traditionally buy a little gold or something lasting. It is also remembered as the birth day of Parashurama, and the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines traditionally reopen for the pilgrim season on it.
How the date is fixed
The festival is on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya. The day that counts is the one on which Tritiya covers more of the forenoon, Purvahna, from sunrise to midday; if the two days are within 15 minutes of each other, the earlier day is taken.

Muhurat for Akshaya Tritiya
For Chandigarh in 2027, the main time is the Puja muhurat (forenoon): 5:33 am – 9:04 am on Sunday, 9 May. Sunrise, sunset and the parts of the day move with the city, so the window, and sometimes the day itself, can change elsewhere. Choose your city below and the tables follow.
| Muhurat | 2026 | 2027 | 2028 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puja muhurat (forenoon) | 10:50 am – 12:22 pm | 5:33 am – 9:04 am | 5:43 am – 12:21 pm |
The puja and the giving are best done in the forenoon. Giving water, grain, clothing or food to those who need them is the most widely kept custom, and many people take the day as the start of a new account book or project.
In some years Tritiya starts late in the morning on one day and ends early on the next; the calculation chooses the day on which more of the forenoon is covered.

Questions people ask
What does Akshaya mean?
Akshaya means ‘that does not decay’. On this tithi, the texts say, what is begun or given with a good heart does not diminish, which is why charity and new beginnings are favoured.
Do I have to buy gold?
No. Buying gold is a modern custom that has grown up around the day. The older practice is giving, learning something new or beginning a worthwhile task, and any lasting purchase, large or small, is as good.
When is the best time on the day?
The calculation uses the forenoon, from sunrise to midday, when Tritiya is present. The muhurat table shows that window for your city.
When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2026, 2027 and 2028?
Akshaya Tritiya is on Sunday, 19 April 2026; Sunday, 9 May 2027; Thursday, 27 April 2028, calculated for Chandigarh. In another city the day can differ by one when the tithi starts or ends close to the time of day the rule uses.
How does JYOTISH.info calculate Akshaya Tritiya?
From the sky, with the astronomy-engine library on the Lahiri sidereal zodiac: the lunar month from the Sun’s sign at the new moon, the tithi from the Moon–Sun angle, and the day part that the festival’s own rule asks for, at the city’s sunrise and sunset. Nothing is copied from a table. The rule is stated above and the full method is on the method page.
Every position on this page is calculated sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa from the astronomy-engine library (MIT licence).
