Ram Navami 2027 falls on Thursday, 15 April, on Shukla Navami of Chaitra. The times here are for Chandigarh; choose your city to see yours.

What Ram Navami is

Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, on the ninth tithi of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. Tradition places the birth at midday in Ayodhya, so temples ring bells and sing at noon, and the Ramayana is read in homes and temples. The day closes the nine days of Chaitra Navratri in many families, and in the old accounts it falls under Punarvasu nakshatra.

How the date is fixed

The festival is on Chaitra Shukla Navami. The Smarta day is the one on which Navami covers the midday fifth of the daylight, Madhyahna. The Vaishnava day, kept by many Vaishnava sects, is the one on which Navami is present at sunrise, which is sometimes the following day.

Questions people ask

Why is Ram Navami celebrated at midday?

The Ramayana tradition says Rama was born at noon, when the Sun was at its height. The puja is therefore centred on Madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daylight.

What is the difference between the Smarta and Vaishnava Ram Navami?

Smarta calendars choose the day on which Navami is present at midday. Vaishnava calendars choose the day on which Navami is present at sunrise. In most years the two agree; in some years they are a day apart.

Is Ram Navami the same as Rama Janmotsav?

Yes. It is also called Rama Janmotsav, Rama’s birth festival, and some regions combine it with Sri Rama Navami celebrations that run for nine days.

When is Ram Navami in 2026, 2027 and 2028?

Ram Navami is on Thursday, 26 March 2026; Thursday, 15 April 2027; Monday, 3 April 2028, calculated for Chandigarh. In another city the day can differ by one when the tithi starts or ends close to the time of day the rule uses.

How does JYOTISH.info calculate Ram Navami?

From the sky, with the astronomy-engine library on the Lahiri sidereal zodiac: the lunar month from the Sun’s sign at the new moon, the tithi from the Moon–Sun angle, and the day part that the festival’s own rule asks for, at the city’s sunrise and sunset. Nothing is copied from a table. The rule is stated above and the full method is on the method page.

Every position on this page is calculated sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa from the astronomy-engine library (MIT licence).
