What Ugadi / Gudi Padwa is
Ugadi, called Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and the first day of Chaitra Navratri in much of the north, is the start of the lunar new year in the Deccan, the day Chaitra Shukla Pratipada begins the year’s tithis anew. Households raise a gudi, a bright cloth on a pole, draw rangoli at the door and eat a mix of six tastes, the Ugadi pachadi, that stands for the sweet, sour and bitter turns of the year. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka it is a day to hear the new year’s almanac, the panchanga shravanam.
How the date is fixed
The festival falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first tithi after the new moon that opens Chaitra. The day is the one whose sunrise falls in that Pratipada; when no sunrise does, it goes to the day on which most of the Pratipada lies in daylight.

Questions people ask
Is Ugadi the same as Gudi Padwa?
They fall on the same day, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, and mark the same new year; the name and customs differ by region. Ugadi is used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Goa.
Why is Ugadi pachadi made of six tastes?
Each taste, sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent, stands for a feeling the year may bring. Eating them together is a way of accepting the whole year in advance.
Why can the day differ between cities?
The day is fixed by sunrise, and a Pratipada that starts or ends close to sunrise can reach one city’s sunrise and not another’s.
When is Ugadi / Gudi Padwa in 2026, 2027 and 2028?
Ugadi / Gudi Padwa is on Thursday, 19 March 2026; Wednesday, 7 April 2027; Monday, 27 March 2028, calculated for Chandigarh. In another city the day can differ by one when the tithi starts or ends close to the time of day the rule uses.

From the sky, with the astronomy-engine library on the Lahiri sidereal zodiac: the lunar month from the Sun’s sign at the new moon, the tithi from the Moon–Sun angle, and the day part that the festival’s own rule asks for, at the city’s sunrise and sunset.
