Ganesh Chaturthi 2027: date, tithi and muhurat
Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 falls on Saturday, 4 September, on Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada. The times here are for Chandigarh; choose your city to see yours.
What Ganesh Chaturthi is
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha, the elephant-headed lord of beginnings, on the fourth tithi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. Clay images of Ganesha are installed at home and in community pandals, worshipped with modak, durva grass and red hibiscus for one, three, five, seven or ten days, and then carried to water in a procession of drums and song. It is the most public festival of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, and is kept warmly across the Deccan and in Indian communities abroad.
How the date is fixed
The festival is on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. The day that counts is the one on which Chaturthi covers Madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daylight, because the texts place Ganesha’s birth at midday; the time to install the image is the part of that window in which Chaturthi is running.

The image is installed with a Pran Pratishtha puja, offered sweets twice a day and given an aarti each morning and evening. On the last day, in the public pandals usually Anant Chaturdashi, it is immersed with the cry “Ganapati Bappa Morya”, asking him to return soon.
Many families now bring an eco-friendly image of unfired clay that dissolves in water, and some immerse it at home in a bucket instead of the river or sea.

Questions people ask
Why is the puja done at midday?
The Puranic accounts place Ganesha’s birth at midday on this tithi, so the calculation looks for the Chaturthi that is present through Madhyahna and shows that window for your city.
How long does the festival last?
Families keep Ganesha at home for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days, and public pandals usually for ten. The last day is Anant Chaturdashi, the fourteenth tithi of the same fortnight, when the large immersion processions take place.
Why a clay idol?
Tradition prefers an image of natural clay because it returns to water without harming it. For the same reason many cities now ask for unfired clay images and natural colours.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi in 2026, 2027 and 2028?
Ganesh Chaturthi is on Monday, 14 September 2026; Saturday, 4 September 2027; Wednesday, 23 August 2028, calculated for Chandigarh. In another city the day can differ by one when the tithi starts or ends close to the time of day the rule uses.
How does JYOTISH.info calculate Ganesh Chaturthi?
From the sky, with the astronomy-engine library on the Lahiri sidereal zodiac: the lunar month from the Sun’s sign at the new moon, the tithi from the Moon–Sun angle, and the day part that the festival’s own rule asks for, at the city’s sunrise and sunset. Nothing is copied from a table. The rule is stated above and the full method is on the method page.
Every position on this page is calculated sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa from the astronomy-engine library (MIT licence).
