The 10th house (Karma bhava)
The 10th house is the Karma bhava, a kendra and upachaya house; in the natural zodiac it is Makara, and its significator is Surya, Budha, Guru and Shani. In a whole-sign chart it is simply the 10th sign from your lagna.

What the 10th house covers
The 10th house is the sign at the top of the chart, nine places after the rising sign. The texts call it Karma (action) and read it for profession, public standing, responsibility, authority, achievement and reputation. It belongs to two groups: it is a kendra (an angular house, a pillar of the chart) and an upachaya (a “growing” house that improves with time and effort). Its natural sign is Makara, it has four significators (Surya for authority, Budha for skill, Guru for ethics and Shani for steady work), and in the Kalapurusha it stands for the knees.
What it signifies
- Career and profession
- Public standing and reputation
- Authority and responsibility
- Achievements and recognition
- Actions and the way you work
- Employers and superiors
- Government and institutions
- The knees (in the Kalapurusha)
How its lord is read
The 10th lord shows the field through which your work finds its voice. If Mesha is on your 10th house, Mangal is its lord; Mangal in your 3rd would tie your career to your own initiative, communication and skills, perhaps in sales, writing or a hands-on craft, while Mangal in your 6th would tie it to service, discipline and competition. A 10th lord in its own or exalted sign, or placed in a kendra or trikona, is read as supporting steady professional standing. A lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as asking for more effort or a different route, not as the absence of a career.
Grahas in the 10th house
A graha in the 10th house colours the way you work and how others see you in public life. The texts say natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu do well here, giving drive, authority or persistence; that is the upachaya principle. Natural benefics such as Guru, Shukra and Budha are read as bringing skill, courtesy and goodwill in dealings with the public. The significators are read for different sides of work: Surya for authority, Budha for skill, Guru for ethics, Shani for discipline. An empty 10th house is not a weak one: its lord carries its matters.
When the 10th house speaks
The matters of the 10th house tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of its lord, of grahas placed in the 10th, and of the significators, often as a new role, a new responsibility or a change in how you are seen at work. Guru passing over the 10th house, or aspecting it, is read as favourable for advancement. Shani over it asks for sustained effort and for patience with recognition. We count gochar from the natal Moon and from the lagna. The texts read dasha, transit and the rest of the chart together; career is not read from the 10th alone.
What this does not mean
- A weak or empty 10th house does not mean you will not have a career; it grows with time and effort, and the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses and the dashas also shape work.
- The 10th house does not assign you one “correct” profession; the texts give broad leanings, and many different routes can suit the same chart.
- A malefic graha such as Shani in the 10th is not a sign of struggle; the texts say malefics do well in the 10th, and the result is often success through persistence.
- A slow start does not mean you are late; the upachaya houses are known to ripen with the years.
What you can actually do
- Look at the 10th lord and any grahas in the 10th house in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info, and note where the 10th lord sits.
- List what you are good at and what you enjoy, then use the 10th house description as a starting point for a conversation about work, not an instruction.
- Build one skill steadily, such as a certificate, a portfolio or a project, since the 10th house rewards visible, accumulated work.
- Keep promises and deadlines at work, and ask a senior person for honest feedback twice a year.
Questions people ask
What does the 10th house mean in astrology?
The 10th house, called Karma bhava, stands for career, public standing, authority and the work you are known for. It is both a kendra and an upachaya. It shows how you act in the world and how the world sees your actions.
Does the 10th house decide my career?
No. It gives tendencies, such as the kind of work or standing you lean towards, but career also depends on your education, effort, family situation and opportunities. The texts read the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses, the dasha and the transits along with the 10th.
Is the 6th or the 10th house for a job?
The 6th house is for service, routine and working under others, and the 10th is for career and public standing. A salaried job involves both, while income itself is read from the 2nd and 11th. The texts look at them together.
Which grahas are significators of the 10th house?
Four are named: Surya for authority, Budha for skill and trade, Guru for ethics and guidance, and Shani for steady work. Each shows one side of professional life, so the texts read them all, rather than relying on one.
When does the 10th house become active?
Mainly in the dasha of the 10th lord and of grahas placed in the 10th, and when Guru or Shani pass over or aspect the house. These often show as new roles or responsibilities, and the texts weigh them with the rest of the chart.
