The 11th house (Labha bhava)
The 11th house is the Labha bhava, a upachaya house; in the natural zodiac it is Kumbha, and its significator is Guru. In a whole-sign chart it is simply the 11th sign from your lagna.
At a glance
What the 11th house covers
The 11th house is the sign ten places after the rising sign. The texts call it Labha (gain) and read it for income and profit, the fulfilment of desires, friends and social circles, elder siblings, communities and long-term goals. It is an upachaya (one of the four “growing” houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, which the texts say improve with time and effort), and it is also a panaphara, a house of support. Its natural sign is Kumbha, its significator is Guru, and in the Kalapurusha it stands for the calves and ankles.
What it signifies
- Income and profit
- Fulfilment of desires and goals
- Friends and social circles
- Elder brothers and sisters
- Communities and groups
- Networks and useful contacts
- Aspirations and long-term plans
- The calves and ankles (in the Kalapurusha)
How its lord is read
The 11th lord shows where your gains and your circle of friends tend to come from. If Vrishabha is on your 11th house, Shukra is its lord; Shukra in your 5th would tie gains and friendships to creativity, learning and shared interests, while Shukra in your 2nd would tie them to family, savings and speech. A lord in its own or exalted sign, or placed in a kendra or trikona, is read as supporting steady gains. A lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as asking for more work, or a longer wait, before gains arrive, not as their absence.
Grahas in the 11th house
A graha in the 11th house colours your income, your friendships and your goals. The texts say natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu do especially well here, giving ambition, perseverance and gains through effort; that is the upachaya principle. Natural benefics such as Guru, Shukra and Budha are read as bringing warm friendships, helpful contacts and steady earnings. Guru, the significator, is read for fulfilment and generosity. An empty 11th house does not mean a lack of friends or income: its lord and aspects carry its matters.
When the 11th house speaks
The matters of the 11th house tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of its lord, of grahas placed in the 11th, and of Guru as the significator, often as new income, a widening circle or a long-held goal moving forward. Guru passing over the 11th house, or aspecting it, is read as favourable for gains and friendships. Shani over it asks for steadiness and for patience with results. We count gochar from the natal Moon and from the lagna. Income is not read from the 11th alone; the texts read the 2nd and 10th houses, the dasha and the transits together.
What this does not mean
- An empty 11th house does not mean you will have little income; the 2nd and 10th houses, the dashas and your own work shape earnings as much.
- A malefic graha in the 11th is not a problem; the texts say malefics do especially well in this house and often give gains through effort.
- Labha does not mean easy money; the 11th shows gains that come through effort, friends and networks, and it makes no promise of sudden wealth.
- Having few friends does not mean the 11th house is spoiled; it also stands for goals and communities, and people differ in how wide a circle they like.
What you can actually do
- Look at the 11th lord and any grahas in the 11th house in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info, and note where the 11th lord sits.
- Write down three goals for the next two years and one concrete step towards each, since the 11th house is about wishes that get fulfilled.
- Invest in a community or group that shares your interest, whether a club, an association or an online course, and take part regularly.
- Keep a simple monthly record of income and spending, so that gains actually become savings.
Questions people ask
What does the 11th house mean in astrology?
The 11th house, called Labha bhava, stands for income, gains, friends, elder siblings, communities and the fulfilment of your goals. It is an upachaya, a house that grows with time. It shows what you gain from your efforts and from the people around you.
Is the 11th house the house of money?
It is the house of income and gain, while the 2nd is the house of savings. Together with the 10th, which shows the work behind your income, they give a fuller picture of money. The texts do not read wealth from a single house.
Why are malefics said to do well in the 11th house?
The 11th is an upachaya, a growing house, and the texts say natural malefics such as Shani, Mangal, Surya, Rahu and Ketu do well in these houses. Their drive and persistence suit the house of gains. Even so, results depend on the lord, the dasha and the rest of the chart.
Does the 11th house show elder siblings?
Yes, the 11th house is read for elder brothers and sisters, while the 3rd is read for younger ones. These are tendencies, such as closeness or support, and not a count or a verdict about anyone.
When does the 11th house become active?
Mainly in the dasha of the 11th lord, of grahas placed in the 11th, and of Guru, and when Guru or Shani pass over or aspect it. For gains, as for everything else, the texts look at the whole chart first.
