Who Budha is

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (chapter 3) calls Budha the yuvaraja, the young prince, and the giver of speech. It is youthful, curious, quick and adaptable. The texts say Budha is benefic in good company and takes on the harshness of malefic grahas it sits with, which is why its sign and companions matter so much. It stands for intellect, speech, writing, mathematics, trade, accounts and learning. Budha never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, stays roughly a month in a sign and turns retrograde three or four times a year, each time for about three weeks. So Budha colours the feel of a month more than of a year.

What Budha signifies

  • Intellect, reasoning and analysis
  • Speech, writing and communication
  • Trade, business and accounts
  • Mathematics, learning and education
  • Young people and students
  • Maternal uncles and cousins
  • Friends and the local circle
  • Skin and the nervous system (as the texts assign)
  • Writers, teachers, accountants and merchants

When Budha is strong

A well-placed Budha — in Mithuna or Kanya (its own signs), in Kanya where it is exalted, in a friend’s sign, or in the 1st house where the texts give it directional strength — tends to show as a quick, clear mind. In everyday life: easy learning, fluent speech or writing, a head for numbers and bargains, a knack for explaining things simply, and a sense of humour. Such people often do well in teaching, accounts, media, software or trade.

When Budha is under strain

A strained Budha — in Meena (debilitated), in Chandra’s sign, combust close to the Sun, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th — is read as a mind that works harder to stay organised. What it asks of a person is method: writing things down, checking numbers and messages twice, and slowing down before speaking or signing. Overthinking and scattered attention are the usual themes. Budha never strays far from the Sun, so combustion is common and is read by degrees of closeness, not as a defect. The texts list cancellations, and the whole chart decides.

Budha’s mahadasha

Budha’s mahadasha runs for 17 years, among the longest, and covers learning and earning together. It tends to emphasise education, communication, business and trade, writing, advisory or analytical work, work-related travel and the people around you: siblings, cousins, friends and colleagues. Many describe it as a period of many small moves rather than one big one. Whether it feels like study, a business, a relocation or a run of deals depends on the house Budha sits in, the houses it rules (the 1st and 4th for Mithuna lagna, the 5th and 8th for Kumbha lagna), its dignity and the antardasha.

Budha’s transit (gochar)

From the natal Moon, Phaladeepika (chapter 26) calls Budha’s transit favourable in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th signs — a longer list than for most grahas — and weaker in the rest. Budha changes sign about every month and often runs beside the Sun, so its effect is on the tone of a month: how clearly you communicate, how smoothly paperwork and travel go. Its retrograde spells, three or four a year, are traditionally a time to review, revise and finish rather than start new contracts. They do not stop work.

What this does not mean

  • A retrograde Budha does not mean contracts fail or communication breaks down; the texts see retrograde motion as a different kind of strength, and the usual advice is only to review and double-check.
  • A combust Budha does not mean a weak mind; because Budha is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, many sharp and successful people have it, and what counts is how close it is and where it sits.
  • A debilitated Budha in Meena does not mean poor intelligence; Meena is an intuitive, imaginative sign, and Budha there often thinks in pictures and feelings rather than in lists.
  • A Budha mahadasha does not mean seventeen years of worry or only studies; it can be business, writing, travel or advice, depending on the house and lordship it carries.

What you can actually do

  • Read Budha’s sign, house and nearness to the Sun in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info before calling it combust or weak; the degrees tell the real story.
  • In a Budha period or a retrograde spell, read before you sign: check numbers, dates and addresses twice and keep important agreements in writing.
  • Use Budha’s strengths on purpose: learn one new skill, keep a notebook, or explain what you know to someone younger.
  • If your mind feels scattered, reduce the channels: one task at a time, notifications off for an hour, and a short list for the day.

Questions people ask

What does Budha (Mercury) represent in astrology?

Budha represents intellect, speech, writing, learning, trade and accounts, and the skills of hands and tongue. The texts call it the prince of the grahas and say it takes the nature of the grahas it joins. In a chart, its sign and house show where thinking and communicating become most active.

Is Mercury retrograde bad in Vedic astrology?

The classical texts do not call retrograde motion bad; they treat a retrograde graha as having motional strength. Many astrologers advise reviewing and double-checking during Budha’s three or four retrograde spells a year, because plans tend to be revisited. It is a reason for care, not for alarm.

What is Budhaditya yoga?

Budhaditya yoga is the name tradition gives to Budha and Surya sharing a sign. It is very common, because Budha never strays far from the Sun. It is linked with a sharp intellect and skill with words; how strongly it shows depends on how close Budha is and the house they share.

How many years is the Budha mahadasha?

Budha’s mahadasha lasts 17 years in the Vimshottari system. It follows Shani’s 19 years in the fixed order and is followed by Ketu’s 7 years, after which the 120-year cycle begins again. Your own position in the cycle comes from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth.

In which sign is Budha exalted and in which debilitated?

Budha is exalted in Kanya, deepest around the 15th degree, and debilitated in Meena. Kanya is also one of its own signs, along with Mithuna, so the same sign is both its home and its exaltation. The texts list cancellation rules for a debilitated Budha.
