Who Chandra is

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (chapter 3) calls Chandra the manas, the mind, and the queen among the grahas. It is cool, soft, changing and receptive. The texts say a bright, waxing Moon is gentle and benefic, while a waning Moon close to the Sun is weaker. Chandra stands for the mother, mood, memory, nourishment, home comfort and the way a person feels. It is the fastest-moving graha, about 2¼ days in each sign and roughly 27 days around the whole zodiac, so it times small things: days, moods, the right moment for a task.

What Chandra signifies

  • The mind, mood and emotions
  • The mother and caring women
  • Memory and imagination
  • Home, comfort and a sense of belonging
  • The public, crowds and popularity
  • Food, milk and water
  • Sleep and rest
  • Caregiving, nursing and hospitality
  • The chest and the body’s fluids (as the texts assign)

When Chandra is strong

A well-placed Chandra — in Karka, its own sign, in Vrishabha where it is exalted, in a friend’s sign, bright and waxing, or in the 4th house where it has directional strength — tends to show as emotional steadiness. In everyday terms: a mind that settles after a hard day, an easy way with people, a warm bond with the mother or the home, a good memory, and a talent for caring, hosting or feeding others. People often find such a person approachable and trusted.

When Chandra is under strain

A strained Chandra — in Vrishchika (debilitated), waning and close to the Sun around the new moon, with Rahu or Shani, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th — is read as a mind that feels the weather more. What it asks of a person is steadiness built on purpose: regular sleep and meals, a few people to talk to, and a pause before reacting. It describes temperament, not a judgement on anyone’s mind. The texts list cancellations, such as the support of a strong Guru, and the whole chart decides, including the Moon’s nakshatra and the strength of the 4th house.

Chandra’s mahadasha

Chandra’s mahadasha lasts 10 years. It tends to emphasise the inner life and the home: emotions, the mother, a house and a place to belong, caring or nourishing work, the public, and the need for emotional security. The Moon is also the starting point of the whole Vimshottari count — the first dasha you are born into comes from the Moon’s nakshatra — so this dasha often feels personal. It differs from chart to chart through the house the Moon sits in, the houses it rules (Karka is the 4th for Mesha lagna but the 10th for Tula lagna), its strength and phase, and the antardasha running at the time.

Chandra’s transit (gochar)

Chandra changes sign every 2¼ days, so its transit is the rhythm of days, not years. The texts (Phaladeepika, chapter 26) count it from your own Moon sign and call it favourable in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th, and less comfortable in the 4th, 8th and 12th. This is the idea behind chandra bala (where the Moon’s sign stands from yours) and tara bala (where today’s nakshatra stands from your birth nakshatra), both used to pick a comfortable day for a task. Taken lightly, they help you plan; they are not a rule to fear.

What this does not mean

  • A weak or debilitated Chandra does not mean an unstable mind; it describes a more sensitive temperament, and many sensitive people are good listeners, writers, carers and artists.
  • A waning Moon at birth does not make a person unlucky; the texts only say it is less bright than a full Moon, and the rest of the chart can supply what it lacks.
  • The Moon passing the 8th sign from your own Moon, which people call chandrashtama, does not make those 2¼ days bad; it is a gentle reason to avoid starting something big when you can choose.
  • A Chandra mahadasha does not mean ten years of mood swings or only family matters; the house and lordship it carries decide whether it is about home, career, learning or travel.

What you can actually do

  • Note your Moon sign and birth nakshatra in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info; every dasha and transit in your reading starts from them.
  • On days when the Moon is in your 8th or 12th sign, keep decisions small and routines steady, and save signing or launching for another day if the choice is yours.
  • Protect the simple Moon things whatever your chart shows: regular sleep, regular meals, time near water or open sky, and one person you can talk to honestly.
  • Keep a short mood-and-day diary for two lunar months; your own pattern across the waxing and waning fortnight is often more useful than any general rule.

Questions people ask

Why is the Moon sign (rashi) so important in Vedic astrology?

Because Vedic astrology counts dashas and transits from the Moon. Your first Vimshottari dasha comes from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth, and gochar is read from your Moon sign. The Moon is also the mind and mood, so the Moon sign often describes temperament better than the Sun sign does.

In which sign is Chandra exalted and in which debilitated?

Chandra is exalted in Vrishabha, strongest around the 3rd degree, and debilitated in Vrishchika. Its own sign is Karka. It rules three nakshatras: Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. Exaltation and debilitation describe comfort, not destiny, and the texts list cancellations.

How many years is the Chandra mahadasha?

Chandra’s mahadasha lasts 10 years in the Vimshottari system. It follows Surya’s 6 years and is followed by Mangal’s 7. If your Moon was in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana at birth, you were born into the Chandra dasha and live part of it as a child.

What are chandra bala and tara bala?

Chandra bala looks at the sign the Moon is in today, counted from your birth Moon sign. Tara bala counts from your birth nakshatra to today’s nakshatra and looks at the remainder after dividing by nine. Classical muhurta uses both to choose a comfortable day.
