Who Mangal is
In chapter 3 of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mangal is the senapati, the commander of the grahas, and the graha of strength. It is hot, dry, quick and direct, and counted among the krura (harsh) grahas, meaning forceful in manner rather than harmful. Mangal stands for energy, courage, younger siblings, land and property, the engineer, soldier, surgeon and athlete, and the willingness to act. Besides the 7th it aspects the 4th and 8th houses from where it sits. It stays about 45 days in a sign, longer when retrograde, so its transits are medium-length chapters of effort.

When Mangal is strong
A well-placed Mangal — in Mesha or Vrishchika, its own signs, in Makara where it is exalted, in a friend’s sign, or in the 10th house (its directional strength) or the 3rd, 6th and 11th — tends to show as courage you can use. In everyday life that can look like stamina for long days, readiness to start things, a competitive edge in sport, exams or business, the confidence to speak up, a good bond with younger brothers or sisters, and practical success with land, tools or building. It also tends to give a fighter’s honesty: a person who says what they mean and then gets on with it.
When Mangal is under strain
A strained Mangal — in Karka (debilitated), in Budha’s signs, combust near the Sun, or in the 8th or 12th — is read as energy that finds it harder to flow in a straight line. What it asks of a person is practice: pausing before acting, choosing which battles are worth fighting, and finding a physical outlet such as sport or hard work. Impatience and arguments are the usual themes, not fate. The texts list cancellations, Guru’s support among them, and the whole chart — above all the sign and house — decides.
Mangal’s mahadasha
Mangal’s mahadasha lasts 7 years. It tends to emphasise action: starting a venture, building or buying property, competing for a position, physical work or training, and matters with brothers and sisters. Many people feel more driven, and less patient, during it. The same dasha reads differently from chart to chart because Mangal speaks through its house and the houses it rules — for Karka lagna it rules the 10th and the 5th, quite another matter from the 1st and 6th it rules for Vrishchika lagna — and through its dignity and the antardasha running at the time.
Mangal’s transit (gochar)
Phaladeepika (chapter 26) calls Mangal’s transit favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th signs from the natal Moon and testing in the rest, which means a stretch of heat, haste and short tempers, not loss. Over its six weeks or so in a sign it tends to light up that area from the lagna: effort at work in the 10th, family disagreements in the 4th, spending in the 12th. When Mangal turns retrograde, about once in two years, the usual reading is to review and finish rather than launch.

What this does not mean
- Mangal dosha does not mean a marriage will fail or that a “Manglik” may marry only another Manglik; it is one reading of Mangal in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, and tradition itself lists many cancellations.
- Mangal in the 7th house does not mean a quarrelsome marriage; tradition links it with a spirited, direct partnership, and Guru’s aspect or a strong 7th lord changes the picture.
- A debilitated Mangal in Karka does not mean cowardice or failure; it is a softer, more emotional Mars that often works through care and persistence rather than force.
- A Mangal mahadasha does not mean seven years of conflict; for many charts it is the time when a home, a business or a body of work gets built.
