Mangal dosha check, done honestly

Mangal dosha, or Manglik, is the placement of Mars in certain houses that matching rules look at. Enter your birth details to see whether your chart counts, whether a classical cancellation applies and what it means for matching.

What the texts say, and the modern name

The rule: Mangal in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna (and, by many, from the Moon) is counted as the dosha. The same texts list cancellations — Mangal in its own sign or exalted, Guru with it or aspecting it, Mangal in Simha or Kumbha — and the matching rule: a partner with the same factor balances it.

So Manglik is a matching term, not a defect: it is weighed together with the eight kootas and both Moons when two charts are compared. Read plainly, Mangal in these houses describes a temperament, quick, direct and protective, and asks the partnership to make room for it.

Our exact rule

Mangal is counted when it sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna or from the Moon. Without a birth time only the count from the Moon is possible.

It is cancelled if Mangal is in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara), if Guru is in the same sign or looks at it from the 5th, 7th or 9th, or if Mangal is in Simha or Kumbha.

Counted, then cancelled: most matching would set it aside. Counted, nothing cancels it: Manglik by the common rule. Not counted: not Manglik.

For information we also show the count from Shukra, which some families use; it does not change the result.

What it does not mean, and what helps

It does not mean a marriage will fail or that a partner is in danger. It is not a reason to delay a marriage, and no stone, puja or "kumbh vivah" is needed.

Whatever the result, these are free and sensible:

  • Choose a partner who can meet directness with calm, and say what you need before it becomes a quarrel.
  • For matching, look at the whole milan — the eight kootas and both Moons — not this one line.
  • Channel the energy: sport, a demanding craft, work that rewards initiative.

The possible results

Manglik
Yes, by the common rule — weighed in matching, nothing to fear.
Counted, then cancelled
Counted, but cancelled — most matching would set it aside.
Not Manglik
No — Mangal is not in a counted house.

Questions people ask

What is Mangal dosha, or Manglik?

Mangal in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna, and by many from the Moon, is counted as the dosha. It is a matching term: it is weighed with the eight kootas and both Moons when two charts are compared.

Will a Manglik marriage fail?

No. It does not mean a marriage will fail or that a partner is in danger, and it is not a reason to delay a marriage. No stone, puja or “kumbh vivah” is needed.

When is Mangal dosha cancelled?

The texts set it aside when Mangal is in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara), when Guru is with it or looks at it, and when Mangal is in Simha or Kumbha. A partner with the same factor also balances it.

How does this fit into Kundali Milan?

Kundali Milan reads the eight kootas, both Moons and Mangal in both charts together, so this one line is only a part of it. The Kundali Milan page explains how the match is read.
