What Sade Sati is
Shani, Saturn, takes about 29½ years to go round the zodiac and spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. Sade Sati, “seven and a half” in Hindi, is the period when Saturn passes through three signs in a row: the 12th sign from your birth Moon, the Moon sign itself and the 2nd sign from it. In the classical texts Saturn stands for discipline, duty, time and patience, so the period is read as a long stretch that asks for steady effort, not quick results. It returns about every thirty years, so most people meet it two or three times.
The three phases, in plain words
- First phase (Saturn is in the 12th sign from your Moon). The classical texts link this phase with spending, rest and letting go, and with looking after routine, sleep and health habits.
- Second phase (Saturn is over your Moon sign). The core of the period. The texts speak of inner work, responsibility and honest effort, and say that discipline and patience carry it.
- Third phase (Saturn is in the 2nd sign from your Moon). The texts speak of money, speech and family, and of consolidating what you have built. Steady habits and clear speech help.
None of this is a verdict. Many people look back on these years as the ones in which they built something lasting, and your whole chart, your running dasha and Saturn’s own strength in it matter at least as much as this one transit.

How the dates are calculated
Saturn’s position is calculated sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa (about 24°14′ in October 2026), and the page finds each day on which Saturn crosses a sign boundary. Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months every year, so it can slip back over a boundary for a few weeks and enter the same sign twice. Runs separated by less than eighteen months are counted as one, and the dates in IST are those of the first entry. The tables below list every crossing from 1990 to 2040.
Where Saturn is now

Questions people ask
Is Sade Sati bad?
No. The classical texts describe Saturn’s passage as a long period of lessons in discipline and patience, and they say the result depends on the whole chart, not on this transit alone. Many people find it a productive stretch. This page never calls a chart bad.
How long does Sade Sati last?
About seven and a half years: Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each of three signs. Retrograde turns can stretch the calendar span by a few months, and the tables show the exact dates.
How do I know my Moon sign?
Enter your date of birth above. The calculator works out where the Moon was, sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Without a birth time the Moon changes sign during the day on about four days in ten, and then the calculator shows both possible signs.
Do I need a remedy or a puja?
No. The classical advice is a steady routine, honest work and patience, all free. JYOTISH.info does not sell gemstones, pujas or remedies for Sade Sati.
Why does another site show different dates?
Usually the ayanamsa, or whether retrograde re-entries are counted. These dates use Lahiri and the first entry into each sign, with runs less than eighteen months apart counted as one. A difference of a few weeks near a sign boundary is normal.
Does everyone go through Sade Sati?
Every Moon sign meets it about every thirty years, because Saturn visits every sign in turn. Which three signs are in it at a given time depends only on where Saturn is, so some Moon signs are in it today and others are not.
