What the 6th house covers

The 6th house is the sign five places after the rising sign. The texts call it Ari or Ripu (the rival) and read it for daily routine, work habits, service and employees, loans and debts, disputes and competition. It belongs to two groups. It is a dusthana (one of the three “difficult” houses, the 6th, 8th and 12th, which ask for effort and teach through challenge), and it is an upachaya (a “growing” house that improves with time). Its natural sign is Kanya, its significators are Mangal and Shani, and in the Kalapurusha it is the lower belly.

What it signifies

  • Daily routine and work habits
  • Service and jobs under others
  • Employees and helpers
  • Loans, debts and obligations
  • Disputes and legal matters
  • Competition and rivals
  • Habits that keep you well
  • Problem-solving and discipline
  • The lower belly (in the Kalapurusha)

How its lord is read

The 6th lord shows where your daily effort and your dealings with rivals and obligations are concentrated. If Tula is on your 6th house, Shukra is its lord; Shukra in the 10th would tie service, routine and competition to your career, so work with colleagues and clients becomes the field where effort is asked of you, while Shukra in the 4th would bring such matters closer to home and family. A 6th lord in its own sign or in a friend’s sign is read as handling obligations calmly. A 6th lord in another difficult house is read as asking for steady effort in the area of that house.

Grahas in the 6th house

Grahas in the 6th house are read for work habits, the way you meet competition and how you handle loans and routine. The texts say natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu do well here, giving stamina, discipline and the ability to outlast rivals; that is the upachaya principle. Natural benefics such as Guru, Shukra and Chandra are read as softer, bringing a helpful or cooperative temper to work, sometimes with less drive. Mangal and Shani, the significators, are read for energy and discipline. An empty 6th house is a quiet one, and the texts do not see this as a lack.

When the 6th house speaks

The matters of the 6th house tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of its lord and of grahas placed in it, often as a busier work period, a loan or a competitive phase. Shani or Guru passing over the 6th house, or aspecting it, is read as a time when effort, routine and obligations are tested or rewarded. We count gochar from the natal Moon and from the lagna. Because the 6th also grows with practice, many people find these periods productive when they stay organised. The texts read dasha, transit and the chart together.

What this does not mean

  • The 6th house is not a prediction of illness; on this site it is read for routine, work habits and the habits that keep you well.
  • The word “rival” does not mean someone is against you; it stands for competition, disputes and obstacles, which are part of every working life.
  • A graha in the 6th house does not mean you will be in debt; it shows how you are likely to handle loans, promises and obligations.
  • A dusthana is not a bad house: the 6th is also an upachaya, where malefics are said to do well, and it often rewards hard work and service.

What you can actually do

  • Look at the 6th lord and the grahas in the 6th house in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info, and see which house the 6th lord occupies.
  • Build one steady daily routine, with a fixed time to wake, eat and walk, because the 6th house rewards regular habits.
  • Write down every loan, instalment and due date in one place, pay the smallest first, and talk to a bank officer or a trusted adviser if it feels heavy.
  • Handle disputes calmly and in writing, and bring in a neutral person early, before positions harden.

Questions people ask

What does the 6th house mean in astrology?

The 6th house, called Ari or Ripu bhava, stands for daily work, routine, service, employees, loans, disputes and competition. It is both a dusthana and an upachaya, which means it asks for effort and also grows better with practice. It describes how you meet everyday obligations and challenges.

Is the 6th house a bad house?

No. It is called a dusthana because it asks for effort, not because its results are bad. It is also an upachaya house, where the texts say difficult grahas do well, and it is the house of service and work habits. Many capable, disciplined people have active 6th houses.

Does the 6th house show illness?

In the old lists the 6th house is also connected with health. We do not make health predictions from a chart. On this site we read the 6th for routine, work habits and the habits that keep you well, and we suggest you consult a doctor for any health question.

What are upachaya houses?

Upachaya means “growing”. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses are called upachaya, because the texts say their results improve with age and effort. Natural malefics are said to do well in them.

When does the 6th house become active?

Mainly in the dasha of the 6th lord and of grahas placed in the 6th, and while Shani or Guru pass over or aspect it. These show up as busier work, loans, or competition, and the texts read them together with the rest of the chart.
