What the 7th house covers

The 7th house sits directly opposite the rising sign, so it stands for “the other person”. The texts call it Kalatra (spouse) and Yuvati (young woman), and read it for marriage and the life partner, business partnerships, contracts and dealings with the public. In our reading it covers a partner of any gender. It is a kendra (an angular house, a pillar of the chart). Its natural sign is Tula, its significator is Shukra, and in the Kalapurusha it is the lower back and the pelvis.

What it signifies

  • Marriage and the life partner
  • Husband or wife
  • Business partnerships
  • Contracts and agreements
  • Dealings with the public and clients
  • Negotiation and compromise
  • One-to-one relationships
  • The lower back and pelvis (in the Kalapurusha)

How its lord is read

The 7th lord shows where partnership is likely to be felt in your life. If Karka is on your 7th house, Chandra is its lord; Chandra in your 10th ties partnership to work and public life, so a partner may be met through work or may share your professional world. Chandra in your 4th would tie partnership to home and family. A 7th lord in its own, exalted or a friendly sign is read as supporting steady partnerships. A 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as asking for more patience and clearer understanding, not as denial of partnership. The lord’s nature and the grahas joined with it colour the picture.

Grahas in the 7th house

A graha in the 7th house colours how you relate in close partnerships. Natural benefics such as Guru, Shukra, Chandra and a well-placed Budha are read as warmth, goodwill and a wish for harmony. Natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu are read as intensity, independence or a need for maturity, and the texts see these as asking for understanding on both sides, not as a flaw. Shukra, the significator, is read for love, harmony and affection. An empty 7th house is not a weak one: its lord and the grahas aspecting it carry its matters.

When the 7th house speaks

The matters of the 7th house tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of the 7th lord, of grahas placed in the 7th, and of Shukra as the significator. Guru passing over the 7th house, or aspecting it, is read as favourable for relationships and agreements. Shani over it asks for patience and responsibility. We count gochar from the natal Moon and from the lagna. The texts do not name an age for marriage, and we do not either: they read dasha, transit and the whole chart together, and life choices count as much.

What this does not mean

  • An empty 7th house does not mean no marriage; the 7th lord, Shukra, the aspects on the house and the dashas all carry its matters.
  • A graha in the 7th is not a sentence; malefics there are read as asking for patience and understanding, and many happy partnerships have them.
  • A 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house does not deny partnership; it shows an area where more effort and clarity are likely to be needed.
  • The chart does not tell you to stay or to leave; whether two people suit each other is decided in conversation, not by a score.

What you can actually do

  • Look at the 7th lord, any grahas in the 7th house and the position of Shukra in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info.
  • Write down three qualities you value in a partner and three things you can offer, and use that list as your own guide alongside any chart reading.
  • In an existing relationship or business partnership, practise clear agreements and honest listening; put business terms in writing.
  • If kundali matching is part of your family’s process, treat it as one input among several: meet, talk, and take the advice of elders you trust.

Questions people ask

What does the 7th house mean in astrology?

The 7th house, called Kalatra or Yuvati, stands for marriage, the life partner, business partnerships, contracts and dealings with the public. It is a kendra, one of the four angular houses. It shows how you relate in close, one-to-one relationships.

Does an empty 7th house mean no marriage?

No. Every house has a lord, and the lord’s placement and strength, along with Shukra and the aspects on the house, carry its results. An empty 7th house is common and is not read as a weakness. Whether you marry depends on your life, not on a single house.

Can the 7th house tell the age of marriage?

No. The texts describe which dashas and transits tend to activate the 7th house, but they do not give a fixed age, and a fixed age cannot be known. Marriages happen at many ages and depend on circumstances, choices and families.

Which graha is the significator of marriage?

Shukra is the natural significator of the 7th house, standing for love, harmony and partnership. Its position and strength in your chart are read alongside the 7th lord. A strong Shukra is read as supportive, but it is one factor among many.

Does the 7th house describe my partner?

The texts do read the sign and lord of the 7th house for general qualities of a partner. Treat this as a tendency to reflect on, not a portrait. Real people are far more varied than any sign, and nothing here should be used to judge a person.
