Rahu — the North Node

Rahu is one of the two lunar nodes, the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s; it has no body and no own sign, runs an 18-year Vimshottari dasha, and is exalted in Vrishabha by our convention.

Who Rahu is

Rahu is the point where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path, the north node, and it is always exactly opposite Ketu. It has no body, so the texts call it a shadow graha (chhaya graha) and count it among the army of the grahas (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 3). Rahu is restless and hungry for more. It stands for ambition, appetite, the foreign and the unfamiliar, outsiders, technology, politics and the crowd, and unconventional routes. It moves backwards (we use the mean node), about 18 months in a sign and 18½ years around the zodiac, so its themes build over a year and a half at a time.

What Rahu signifies

  • Ambition, appetite and the wish for more
  • Foreign lands, travel and settling abroad
  • Foreigners, outsiders and other cultures
  • Technology, computers and the internet
  • Unconventional paths and sudden rises
  • Politics, crowds and mass media
  • Large organisations and corporations
  • Research into the unusual
  • Glamour, film, fame and the pull of appearances

When Rahu is strong

A well-placed Rahu — in Vrishabha, where our method treats it as exalted (some texts prefer Mithuna), in a friend’s sign, or in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house, where it does well — tends to show as ambition that finds a field. In everyday life: willingness to try the new, ease with technology and with people of other cultures, success away from home or abroad, quick learning in unfamiliar areas, and an appetite for big goals. The house, the sign lord and companions decide the field.

When Rahu is under strain

A strained Rahu — in Vrishchika (debilitated), in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, where its restlessness is read as most personal, sharing a sign with Surya or Chandra (the pairing tradition calls grahan, or eclipse, yoga), or with an unsupported sign lord — is read as appetite and restlessness that need direction. What it asks of a person is clarity: choosing goals before chasing them, checking facts and sources before committing, and keeping basic habits steady when things move fast. Confusion and overreach are the usual themes, not a verdict on character. The texts list cancellations, and the whole chart decides.

Rahu’s mahadasha

Rahu’s mahadasha lasts 18 years and is among the most talked about. It tends to emphasise ambition and rapid change: a new city or country, a new field, technology and large organisations, politics, a sudden rise in status or interests, and a strong wish for more. Because Rahu has no sign of its own, it works through the sign lord and the grahas it joins, through its house and the antardasha, which is why one person’s Rahu dasha is a foreign posting and another’s is a start-up, a new course or a new circle of friends.

Rahu’s transit (gochar)

Rahu and Ketu always sit opposite each other and move backwards, so the Rahu–Ketu axis shifts to the previous pair of signs about every 18 months and returns to the same signs after 18½ years. From the natal Moon, Phaladeepika (chapter 26) is usually read as treating the nodes like Saturn, easiest in the 3rd, 6th and 11th signs (some add the 10th). Counted from the lagna, Rahu’s sign shows where appetite and change are loudest for those 18 months. The year’s eclipses also fall near the axis. Taken calmly, it is a time to choose a new direction on purpose.

What this does not mean

  • Rahu is not a graha of bad luck; it is a calculated point that magnifies what it touches, and in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses the texts speak well of it.
  • Kaal Sarp is not a yoga of the classical texts; it is a modern name for the pattern in which all seven grahas lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, seen in a small share of charts, and it is a pattern and not a verdict.
  • Rahu’s dasha does not mean eighteen years of confusion or loss; it often brings the move, the new field or the opening a person had been waiting for, and the house and sign lord decide whether it feels smooth or restless.
  • Rahu with the Sun or the Moon, called grahan yoga, does not mean a spoiled mind or a troubled father or mother; it describes the pull of appetite on the self or on the mind, and its strength depends on the degrees between them.

What you can actually do

  • Read Rahu in your own chart: the free kundali on JYOTISH.info shows its sign, house and the sign lord whose results it borrows, which matter more than any general label.
  • In a Rahu dasha or transit, pick one clear goal and write it down; check facts, sources and fine print before committing, because Rahu’s pull is strongest when the target is vague.
  • Say yes to the new on purpose — a course, a tool, a move, a new circle — while keeping the basic routines of sleep, food and money steady.
  • Take breaks from screens and endless scrolling at fixed hours; Rahu is tied to technology and appetite, and a boundary helps anyone.

Questions people ask

What does Rahu represent in astrology?

Rahu is the north node of the Moon, a calculated point and a shadow graha. The texts link it with ambition, appetite, the foreign and the new, technology, politics and unconventional paths. It acts through the sign lord and the grahas it joins, so its house and sign matter more than its name.

How many years is the Rahu mahadasha, and what happens in it?

Rahu’s mahadasha lasts 18 years in the Vimshottari system. It follows Mangal’s 7 years in the fixed order and is followed by Guru’s 16. It tends to bring ambition, change, foreign or technical themes; what actually happens depends on the house, sign lord and antardasha.

Is Kaal Sarp dosha real?

Kaal Sarp is a modern name, not a yoga in the classical texts we cite. It describes all seven grahas lying on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, a pattern seen in a small share of charts. Each graha’s placement and the dashas matter far more than the label.

In which sign is Rahu exalted?

In our method Rahu is exalted in Vrishabha and debilitated in Vrishchika, following one common tradition; some texts give Mithuna for exaltation and Dhanu for debilitation. Rahu has no sign of its own in our method. Traditions differ here, and the rest of the chart is read the same way.

Which houses does Rahu aspect?

In our method Rahu has only the 7th aspect, counted from where it sits. Some traditions also give the nodes the 5th and 9th aspects, but authors differ. We keep to the simple 7th and mention the rest as a difference of tradition.
