Ketu — the South Node

Ketu is one of the two lunar nodes, the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s; it has no body and no own sign, runs an 7-year Vimshottari dasha, and is exalted in Vrishchika by our convention.

Who Ketu is

Ketu is the south node, the point opposite Rahu where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path. Like Rahu it has no body of its own, so the texts call it a shadow graha and place it among the army of the grahas (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 3). Ketu is detached, inward, intuitive and sharp-edged. It stands for moksha (liberation), spiritual inclination, solitude, research, sudden insight, mathematics and skills carried from before. It also moves backwards (we use the mean node), about 18 months in a sign, always exactly opposite Rahu, so its themes unfold over a year and a half at a time.

What Ketu signifies

  • Detachment and renunciation
  • Moksha and spiritual inclination
  • Intuition and sudden insight
  • Skills and knowledge carried from before
  • Research, mathematics and hidden things
  • Solitude, retreat and meditation
  • Ascetics and spiritual teachers
  • Letting go, and endings that make room

When Ketu is strong

A well-placed Ketu — in Vrishchika, where our method treats it as exalted (some texts prefer Dhanu), in a friend’s sign, or in the 3rd, 6th, 11th or 12th house — tends to show as quiet depth. In everyday life: a natural ability that needed no training, a calm that does not depend on applause, interest in research, spirituality or craft, a talent for seeing what is essential, and a willingness to let go of what no longer fits. The house and sign lord decide the field.

When Ketu is under strain

A strained Ketu — in Vrishabha (debilitated), in the 4th, 5th or 7th where its detachment can cut across themes that want closeness, sharing a sign with Surya, Chandra or Mangal, or with a weak sign lord — is read as an inward pull that is hard to explain to others. What it asks of a person is balance: staying in touch while keeping some space, choosing what to let go of instead of letting everything slip, and being honest about doubts. Restlessness and a sense that “something is missing” are the usual themes, not loss. The texts list cancellations, and the whole chart decides.

Ketu’s mahadasha

Ketu’s mahadasha lasts 7 years and is the first dasha in the Vimshottari order. It tends to emphasise withdrawal from the unnecessary: simplifying, finishing old chapters, inner or spiritual work, research, solitude and sudden insights, sometimes a break from a long-held path. Whether it feels like a retreat, a deep study, a move away from a job or a quiet turn inward depends on the sign lord Ketu borrows from, the house it sits in, the grahas beside it and the antardasha. Having no sign of its own, it takes its colour from them.

Ketu’s transit (gochar)

Ketu always sits opposite Rahu and moves backwards, so it changes sign about every 18 months, together with Rahu. The classical tables (Phaladeepika, chapter 26) are usually read as treating the nodes like Saturn from the natal Moon, easiest in the 3rd, 6th and 11th signs. Counted from the lagna, Ketu’s sign shows where detachment and insight are at work for those 18 months: letting go of a habit in the 2nd, a simpler home in the 4th, quiet work in the 12th. Ketu’s transit often feels like subtraction, not loss, and it clears space for what you actually want.

What this does not mean

  • Ketu is not a graha of loss; the texts link it with moksha, liberation, and with detachment from what is no longer needed, which can feel like loss while you are still holding on.
  • Ketu in the 5th or 7th house does not mean children or marriage are denied; it describes a more detached or unconventional style of closeness, and the 5th and 7th lords, Guru and Shukra are read with it.
  • Ketu’s dasha does not mean seven years of emptiness or giving up your life; it is more often a time of simplifying, finishing old chapters, deep study and quiet breakthroughs.
  • Ketu with the Sun or the Moon does not mean a damaged self or mind; it describes an inward, questioning temperament, and its strength depends on the degrees between them.

What you can actually do

  • Read Ketu in your own chart: the free kundali on JYOTISH.info shows its sign, house and the sign lord whose colour it takes; Rahu sits exactly opposite, so read the pair together.
  • In a Ketu period, simplify on purpose: clear one cupboard, one subscription or one commitment that no longer serves you each month, and note how it feels.
  • Make room for quiet: a fixed time each day without a screen, a walk, a notebook or a craft practised alone; the inward turn Ketu invites is easier with a routine.
  • When a sudden insight or doubt arrives, write it down and talk it through with someone you trust before acting; Ketu’s clarity is real, but decisions are better after a pause.

Questions people ask

What does Ketu represent in astrology?

Ketu is the south node of the Moon, a shadow graha opposite Rahu. The texts link it with detachment, moksha, spiritual inclination, intuition, sudden insight and skills carried from before. It acts through the sign lord and the grahas it joins, so its house and sign matter a great deal.

How many years is the Ketu mahadasha?

Ketu’s mahadasha lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari system and is the first in the order, followed by Shukra’s 20 years. If your Moon was in Ashwini, Magha or Mula at birth, you were born into a Ketu dasha and spent part of it as a child.

Is Ketu good or bad?

Neither: Ketu is a shadow graha that works through the sign and grahas it joins. The texts call it harsh in manner, but it gives detachment, insight and skill. Whether it feels like freedom or restlessness depends on the house, the sign lord and the dasha.

Is Ketu in the 12th house good?

Tradition often speaks well of it. The 12th is the house of retreat, rest, foreign lands and letting go, and Ketu is the significator of moksha, so the two fit. The sign, the sign lord and aspects still decide whether it feels like quiet rest or a tug.

In which sign is Ketu exalted?

In our method Ketu is exalted in Vrishchika and debilitated in Vrishabha, following one common tradition; some texts give Dhanu for exaltation and Mithuna for debilitation. Ketu has no sign of its own in our method. The traditions differ on this point; nothing else in the reading changes.
