What the 4th house covers

The 4th house is the sign three places after the rising sign, at the base of the chart. The texts call it Sukha (comfort, contentment) and Bandhu (relatives, those you belong to). It is read for the mother, the home you grew up in and the home you make, land and property, vehicles, early schooling, and inner peace. It is a kendra (an angular house, a pillar of the chart). Its natural sign is Karka, its significator is Chandra (some authors also add Budha, for learning), and in the Kalapurusha it is the chest.

What it signifies

  • Mother and motherly care
  • Home and the household
  • Land, house and property
  • Vehicles
  • Inner peace and contentment
  • Early schooling
  • Roots, homeland and belonging
  • The chest (in the Kalapurusha)

How its lord is read

The 4th lord shows where your sense of belonging and comfort is built. If Tula is on your 4th house, Shukra is its lord; Shukra in the 7th would tie your home life and peace of mind closely to your partner, while Shukra in the 10th would place your sense of home in your work and public role, and a home that is also a base for your career. A 4th lord in its own, exalted or friendly sign is read as supporting a settled home. A lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as moving home or living away for a while, or needing more effort, not as unhappiness.

Grahas in the 4th house

Grahas in the 4th house are read for the feeling of home, the bond with the mother and how settled you feel. Natural benefics such as Chandra, Guru, Shukra and a well-placed Budha are said to support comfort, property and peace of mind. Natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu can show as a restless or practical approach to home, or living away from where you grew up, and the texts see this as a different path, not a lack. Chandra, the significator, is read for emotional steadiness. An empty 4th house is not a weak one: its lord carries its matters.

When the 4th house speaks

Home, property, vehicle and mother-related matters tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of the 4th lord and of grahas placed in the 4th, and in the dasha of Chandra as the significator. Guru passing over the 4th house or aspecting it is read as favourable for settling or improving a home. Shani over it asks for patience in property and household decisions. We count gochar from the natal Moon and from the lagna. The texts read these together; no single transit decides when you settle or move house.

What this does not mean

  • A difficult 4th house does not mean a strained relationship with your mother; it points to themes around home that you can understand and handle.
  • A malefic in the 4th does not mean a broken home; it can also show as a practical or independent attitude to household matters, or as a life in more than one place.
  • An empty or afflicted 4th house does not mean you will never own a home; property is also read from the 11th house, the 4th lord and the dashas.
  • A restless mind is not the result of this house alone; the texts read the Moon, the 4th and the dasha together, and habits like sleep, routine and company matter as much.

What you can actually do

  • Look at the 4th lord and any grahas in the 4th house in the free kundali on JYOTISH.info, and note which house the 4th lord sits in.
  • Keep a small daily routine that makes your home feel settled, such as shared meals or a quiet hour, whatever your chart shows.
  • Spend time with your mother or the elders of your family; the 4th house is about presence, and ordinary time together is what it rewards.
  • Treat property and vehicle decisions as practical ones: compare costs, ask for advice and avoid rushing, whatever the dasha.

Questions people ask

What does the 4th house mean in astrology?

The 4th house, called Sukha or Bandhu, stands for home, mother, property, vehicles, early schooling and inner peace. It is a kendra, one of the four angular houses. It describes where you feel you belong and what gives you a sense of comfort.

Does the 4th house show the mother?

Yes, the texts read the mother from the 4th house and from Chandra, the significator. It shows tendencies such as closeness or distance, and is not a judgement on her or on your relationship. Real bonds depend on conduct and circumstances far beyond the chart.

Can the 4th house tell me about buying a house?

The texts connect the 4th with land and houses, and the 11th with gains, so both are looked at together with the dasha. This gives tendencies, not dates. A good decision still rests on your finances, the paperwork and honest advice.

Which graha is the significator of the 4th house?

Chandra is the natural significator of the 4th house, representing the mind, the mother and comfort. Some authors also give Budha for education. Others add Shukra for vehicles and comforts. In our tables we show Chandra.

When do 4th house matters become active?

Mainly in the dasha of the 4th lord, of grahas in the 4th, and of Chandra, and when Guru or Shani pass over or aspect the 4th house. The texts always weigh these together with the rest of the chart.
