The 1st house (Tanu bhava)

The 1st house is the Tanu bhava, a kendra and trikona house; in the natural zodiac it is Mesha, and its significator is Surya. In a whole-sign chart it is simply the 1st sign from your lagna.

What the 1st house covers

The 1st house is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. In our whole-sign method it is the first of twelve equal houses, and every other house is counted from it. The texts call it Tanu (the body) and Lagna (the ascendant). It is both a kendra (one of the four angular houses, the pillars of the chart) and a trikona (a trine, a house of support), which is why the classical texts treat it as the most important house. Its natural sign is Mesha, its significator is Surya, and the Kalapurusha places it at the head.

What it signifies

  • Self and personality
  • Body build and general constitution
  • Temperament and character
  • First impressions and appearance
  • Early life and how you begin things
  • Vitality and self-confidence
  • The head (in the Kalapurusha)
  • Your approach to life as a whole

How its lord is read

The lord of the 1st house is the graha that rules the rising sign, and the texts treat it as the chart’s chief representative: where it sits shows where your energy is most likely to go. If Mithuna is rising, Budha is the lagna lord; Budha in the 10th house would point your temperament towards work, reputation and public life, while Budha in the 4th would turn it towards home, study and inner life. A lord in its own or exalted sign, or in a kendra or trikona, is read as steady. A lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as asking for more effort, not as a failure. The lord’s own nature and the grahas joined with it colour the result.

Grahas in the 1st house

A graha placed in the 1st house is said to colour how you come across and how you begin things. Natural benefics such as Guru, Shukra and a well-placed Budha are read as softening and supporting. Natural malefics such as Surya, Mangal and Shani are read as giving drive, directness or seriousness, which can be useful in a kendra. Surya, the significator, is read for self-confidence and general vitality. Rahu and Ketu are read for what is unusual or detached in the personality. An empty 1st house is not a weak one: its lord and the grahas that aspect it carry its matters.

When the 1st house speaks

The matters of the 1st house tend to come forward in the Vimshottari dasha of the lagna lord and in the dasha of any graha placed in the 1st house, since each carries the house’s themes. Guru passing over the lagna, or aspecting it, is read as a time of widening. Shani passing over it, or aspecting it, asks for steadier habits. We count gochar both from the natal Moon and from the lagna. No single factor decides anything; the texts read the dasha, the transit and the promise of the chart together.

What this does not mean

  • A graha in the 1st house does not fix your fate; it colours how you present yourself, and you remain free to act differently.
  • Your lagna is not a fixed “type” of person; the texts read it together with the Moon sign, the lagna lord and the aspects on the house.
  • A lagna lord in a difficult house does not mean a hard life; it only shows where your effort is likely to be asked for.
  • A small error in birth time can change the lagna, so the 1st house is only as reliable as the time of birth you enter.

What you can actually do

  • Open the free kundali on JYOTISH.info and note your lagna sign, its lord and the house where that lord sits.
  • Ask a parent for the birth time written in the hospital record or birth certificate, because the lagna depends on it.
  • Notice, without judging, how you behave in new situations, and compare it with what your lagna and its lord describe.
  • Use the description as a mirror for self-knowledge, not as a rule about what you may or may not attempt.

Questions people ask

What is the 1st house in astrology?

The 1st house is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, also called the lagna or ascendant. The classical texts call it Tanu, the body, and read it for temperament, appearance and the way you approach life. Every other house is counted from it, which is why a reading begins here.

How do I find my lagna?

Your lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising at your exact birth time and place. A kundali calculator needs your date, time and place of birth and gives it in seconds. Because the lagna changes roughly every two hours, even a short error in the birth time can move it to the next sign.

Is the lagna the same as my Moon sign or Sun sign?

No, they are three different things. The lagna is the rising sign, the Moon sign (rashi) is where Chandra stood at birth, and the Sun sign is where Surya stood. Vedic astrology reads all three, and in our method the houses are counted from the lagna.

Which graha rules the 1st house?

It depends on your lagna. Mesha and Vrishchika are ruled by Mangal, Vrishabha and Tula by Shukra, Mithuna and Kanya by Budha, Karka by Chandra, Simha by Surya, Dhanu and Meena by Guru, and Makara and Kumbha by Shani. That graha is your lagna lord.

Does a strong 1st house mean a successful life?

Not by itself. A strong lagna lord is read as steadiness and a good base, but success also depends on the other houses, the dasha running and, above all, on what you do. The texts describe tendencies in a chart; they do not promise outcomes.
