How the day is chosen

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each fortnight. The fast is kept on the day whose sunrise falls in the tithi. Two traditions can differ by a day: in the Smarta reckoning that day stands, and in the Vaishnava reckoning the fast moves to the next day when Dashami was still running at arunodaya (about an hour and a half before sunrise), or when the Dwadashi that follows holds two sunrises. Where the two differ, both days are shown. Each Ekadashi carries a name from its month and fortnight; an adhika (extra) month has Padmini and Parama.

Dates are for the chosen city. A tithi that starts or ends within minutes of sunrise can put a date a day apart between two cities; the start and end times are given for that reason. These dates are for guidance, and nothing here is a remedy.

Questions people ask

Smarta or Vaishnava: which day should I keep?

Follow your family’s or your guru’s tradition. Most households keep the Smarta day; followers of Vaishnava sampradayas keep the Vaishnava day. Both are given here where they differ.

Are these dates for my city?

They are calculated for the city in the picker, Chandigarh until you choose another. Choose yours and the list is recalculated for its sunrise and its time zone; a tithi that starts or ends near sunrise can move a date by a day between two cities.

What do the times in each row mean?

The moment the tithi begins and the moment it ends, in the city’s own time. A day in brackets, such as “(2 Jan)”, marks a time that falls on the day before or after the date in the row.

Why does a date differ from my printed calendar?

The calendar was made for another city and the tithi started or ended close to sunrise there; it follows the other tradition; or it uses another ayanamsa or method. The tithi times on this page show which it is.

Why are there 24 Ekadashis in one year and 26 in another?

Each lunar month has two, so a year has 24. A year with an adhika (extra) lunar month has 26: Padmini Ekadashi in its bright half and Parama Ekadashi in its dark half.
