How the day is chosen

The Amavasya date is the day whose sunrise falls in the new-moon tithi; it is named by the purnimanta month, as printed calendars name it. When the tithi began the morning before, that evening is the Darsha, the Moon’s unseen night, and is noted.

Dates are for the chosen city. A tithi that starts or ends within minutes of sunrise can put a date a day apart between two cities; the start and end times are given for that reason. These dates are for guidance, and nothing here is a remedy.

Questions people ask

Are these dates for my city?

They are calculated for the city in the picker, Chandigarh until you choose another. Choose yours and the list is recalculated for its sunrise and its time zone; a tithi that starts or ends near sunrise can move a date by a day between two cities.

What do the times in each row mean?

The moment the tithi begins and the moment it ends, in the city’s own time. A day in brackets, such as “(2 Jan)”, marks a time that falls on the day before or after the date in the row.

Why does a date differ from my printed calendar?

The calendar was made for another city and the tithi started or ended close to sunrise there; it follows the other tradition; or it uses another ayanamsa or method. The tithi times on this page show which it is.

Which Amavasya is Diwali, and which closes Pitru Paksha?

Diwali’s Lakshmi puja is on the Kartika Amavasya (Ashwina in the amanta count), on the evening the tithi holds; the Amavasya a month earlier, Sarva Pitru Amavasya, closes Pitru Paksha. Both are named in the list; the Diwali row links to its page.
